Russia will keep pushing initiative on a new European security treaty, President Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday.
"Our initiative on the European Security Pact has not been recalled or hidden. We keep pushing it and we look forward to interacting in a constructive way with our European partners, with Germany," Medvedev said after meeting with visiting German President Christian Wulff.
"We hope this initiative will be discussed further at different places," he added, insisting that European security must not be fragmented.
"Russia will make extra efforts to develop full-fledge security relations with the European Union and NATO, and with other regional and European associations," he said.
German Ambassador Ulrich Brandenburg said Monday that leaders of France, Russia and Germany will meet later this month in France's Deauville to discuss the new European security treaty.
The treaty was also due to be discussed at the OSCE summit in Kazakhstan in December, he added.
Medvedev put forward an initiative in June 2008 to develop a legally binding treaty on European security. He sent a draft treaty to leaders of other countries and international organizations of the Euro-Atlantic region but has so far received only lukewarm responses from the West.
