New Perspectives on the Cultural Revolution
ed. William A. Joseph, Christine P.W. Wong, and David Zweig
1991
This volume offers a critical, multidisciplinary assessment of the Cultural Revolution, almost 15 years after the arrest of the Gang of Four.  Its articles generally investigate "the profound gap between ideal and reality" – that is, between the stated ultraleftist goals of the Cultural Revolution as well as its actual outcomes and concrete legacy.  Andrew Walder attributes the impetus behind the Cultural Revolution to a paranoia concerning the "enemies of socialism," while Lynn T. White III sees the movement as a natural continuation of preexisting conditions.  The authors agree that its foundations were ill-conceived; Walder, Christine P.W. Wong, and Barry Naughton, for instance, all address the contradictions endogenous to the Cultural Revolution system of ideology.  This collection's analyses of the impact of the Cultural Revolution are almost uniformly critical; only Penelope B. Prime argues that central-local relations led to production successes in Jiangsu province.  Using newly available statistics, descriptive chronologies, and official and personal accounts, several articles point out the failures of the Third Front from policy and economic perspectives.  The negative political and cultural ramifications of the Cultural Revolution are also treated in many of the articles, by authors such as David Zweig (who points out that peasants were, in reality, most disadvantaged in the movement), Keith Forster (who argues that the era's politics did not allow power to devolve to peasants but bred factionalism instead), and Richard Kraus (who looks at the "cultural famine" produced by the regime's arts policy).  Ellen R. Judd and Richard King bring anthropological and literary viewpoints.
Joseph teaches political science at Wellesley College.  After serving as a senior economist at the World Bank, Wong is now the Henry M. Jackson Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington.  Zweig currently serves as Director of the Center on China's Transnational Relations and as Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, both at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Cultural Revolution and Post-Mao Reforms
Tang Tsou
1986
Tsou's essays in this book apply methods from social science – including systems analysis and rational-choice theory – to analysis of specific events in China's recent history, based on theoretical political science frameworks.  He is particularly interested in the interplay between ideology and political development, but he points out that ideology is not the only factor influencing "the complex process of sociopolitical development in 20th-c. China, together with its outcomes."  To that end, his essays – all of which have a specific event as their point of departure – examine not only ideology (whether foreign or domestic in origin) but also historical tradition, the state-society relationship, regime type and organization, different "phases" of Marxism in China, and other factors.  Ultimately, Tsou's book takes on the daunting task of characterizing the "continuing process of rebuilding the state and reforming the party-state in the post-Mao period."
Tang Tsou was Homer J. Livingston Professor Emeritus in Political Science at the University of Chicago.  His other books include America’s Failure in China: 1941-1950 and Twentieth Century Chinese Politics: From the Perspectives of Macro-history and Micromechanism Analysis.  He passed away in 1999.
Lynn T. White
Lynn T. White
Policies of Chaos: The Organizational Causes of Violence in China's Cultural Revolution
Lynn T. White
In this book, White uses the city of Shanghai as a case study for understanding what policies were responsible for the violence and ostracism that erupted in the Cultural Revolution. An extremely exciting piece of scholarship, White's theoretical insights about why the Chinese urban people became so violent with each other during the Cultural Revolution are truly original and sound.
Lynn T. White is a professor at Princeton University in Politics, East Asian Studies, and the Woodrow Wilson School.  He has been an editor of the journal World Politics.
