China's 99B main battle tanks in Peace Mission-2010


The six member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) start joint anti-terror exercises, Peace Mission-2010, at the Matybulak training ground in Kazakhstan on September 9.


Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said Thursday the exercise aims to demonstrate SCO member states' determination and capacity to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism.


It also aims to showcase SCO member states' mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation, their shared wish to protect regional peace and stability and to boost common development and prosperity, he said.


According to Geng, along with the chiefs of the general staff, defense ministers of the SCO member states would also be in Kazakhstan to observe the war game.


Chinese armed forces have participated in anti-terrorism drills under the framework of the SCO since 2002.


The drills will be held for 17 days. The active phase will start September 24. SCO defense ministers will observe the exercises.

In all, 5,000 troops from SCO member states (Russia, China , Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan) take part. Each of the member states will contribute at least one operational-tactical group. Over 300 items of military hardware, more than 50 aircraft and helicopters from Kazakhstan, China and Russia will be employed.


China has sent 1,000 troops, including a ground force combat group, an air force combat group and a logistics group to take part in the drills.  


It's the first time that Chinese Air Force performs long-distance overseas bombing exercises with departure from home. This exercise aims to enhance the capability of accurate attack and land-air coordination. Besides, land-based helicopters perform night targeting exercises, which are also the first exercise of such a kind in the anti-terrorism drills of the SCO.

According to practice, troops will demonstrate their weaponry after exercises. In recent years, Russia has made military reform of "new image of armed force" and its weaponry undergoes development of Informationization, light-duty design and integration. Relevant achievements will be demonstrated this time. Meanwhile, some Chinese weapons, which were demonstrated in the military parade on the 60th founding anniversary of PRC, will be also shown this time.


High level of mutual trust


Thes drill is the largest scale multinational military exercise outside China and Russia under the framework of the SCO, which reflects the level of mutual trust among SCO member states. Kazakhstan agrees foreign air force perform exercises in Kazakhstan by departing from home, which indicates high level of mutual trust.
