At least 31 people were inflicted with burn injuries Thursday as miscreants sprinkled acid on protesters of a demonstration in Peshawar city in the northwest of Pakistan, local sources said.

The injured included infants, women, children, policemen and others. They have been shifted to a local hospital where three of them were referred to plastic surgery, another three to the eye treatment ward, said hospital sources, adding that the rest of the wounded are expected to be released after necessary treatment.

Several hundreds goldsmith men and local residents were protesting against the unscheduled load-shedding in a narrow street at a commercial center in the northwest provincial capital of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province when unidentified miscreants doused acid on them from a nearby tall building, said an eyewitness.

Unscheduled load-shedding is a common phenomenon in Pakistan due to the serious shortage of power in the country. In some cities like Lahore, the electricity will be cut off for eight to ten hours a day even in the summer time when temperature often stands at about 40 to 50 degrees Celsius.
