A Partial Lunar Eclipse

Explanation: What's happened to the Moon? This past weekend, once again, part of the Moon moved through the Earth's shadow. This happens about once or twice a year,on the average, but not each month since theMoon's orbit around the Earth is slightly tilted. Pictured above, theface of a full moon is partly blocked by Earth's clouds, and partly darkened on the upper right byEarth's umbral shadow. Clouds permitting,the partial lunar eclipse wasvisible from the half of the Earth facing the Moon at the time ofthe eclipse, which included much of Earth'sPacific Rim. On July 11, atotal eclipse of the Sun will be visible in a thin swath of Earth crossing the southernPacific Ocean.

月偏食

說明: 月亮怎麼缺了一角？上個禮拜月亮再次通過了地球的影子，產生月食現象。雖然月球軌道略為傾斜於地球軌道，可是月食並不是每個月都發生，平均一年兩次。上圖中，月亮被雲遮去了一小部分，但是右上角的暗影並不是雲造成的，那是地球的影子。天氣許可之下，在地球環太平洋地區的居民都能夠見到此次的月偏食。今年7月11日，日全食將會發生在太平洋南部。
