UNITED NATIONS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria on Tuesday called on state parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to preserve the right for countries to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
"As a country that has expressly declared its desire to seek international cooperation for the application of nuclear technology to boost its electricity generation and for other civilian applications, this third pillar of the NPT regime is of vital interest to us," Nigerian Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia said at the second day of the month-long Review Conference.
The 40-year-old NPT is based on three fundamental pillars: disarmament, non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.
Nigeria was one of the first countries to sign the NPT in 1970, and has voluntarily refrained from developing nuclear weapons.
Ajumogobia said that Nigeria will continue to support positive initiatives aimed at establishing nuclear weapon-free zones in areas of the world where they do not currently exist.
"We regard this as a positive additional step towards advancing the twin pillars of non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament," he said.
The African Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Pelindaba, has always been a top commitment, said Ajumogobia. Nigeria ratified the Treaty of Pelindaba in July 2009.
"Equally important," said Ajumogobia, "is the need for a legally binding instrument to prohibit the production of fissile materials for the production of nuclear materials."
"Non-nuclear states such as Nigeria that have overtly denounced the development of nuclear weapons and nuclear explosive devices must themselves be assured against the threat or impact of deployment of such weapons under a legally binding framework," he added.
