1961年5月17日,恩雅出生在爱尔兰西北部的Gaeltact。Eithne在爱尔兰语中是"火"的意思，也是Aidan女性化的叫法。但是由于“Eithne”发音与“Enya”相同，为了避免别人将自己名字读错，因此恩雅最终选择“Enya”。恩雅的母语当然是爱尔兰语，不过她也会讲拉丁语、威尔士语和西班牙语。
恩雅的父母亲在自组乐团中担任萨克斯风手及钢琴演奏，巡回爱尔兰,苏格兰,英格兰等地演出,表演五十,六十年代的歌曲.恩雅自小修习古典钢琴，在充满音乐气息的环境中成长。
