Mike Tyson, who was arrested following an altercation with a photographer at Los Angeles airport, says he was defending his wife and 10-month-old child. The former boxer claims the photographer was aggressive. Tyson and the photographer were arrested on suspicion of battery, and police said they were interviewing witnesses to determine what happened.
According to one police source, Tyson alleges the photographer struck him in an apparent attempt to provoke him. Tyson's spokeswoman Tammy Brook backs up his claim saying, "Mike acted in self-defense as a father protecting his child." However the photographer has told investigators that Tyson punched him in the face and tried to take his camera. A fellow paparazzo interviewed by KABC-TV Channel 7 said the photographer, Tony Echeverria, regularly photographed celebrities at LAX but said the man would not provoke a physical altercation.
Echeverria said he "wasn't aggressive, I was shooting from a distance, and I was respectful." The photographer said he was struck at least four times. "When you're getting hit by Mike Tyson, it's the worst thing in the world you can imagine," he said, adding that he had video tape evidence to back up his claims.
Both men wish to press charges, according to Sgt. Jim Holcomb of the airport police, but there were "a lot of different versions to the story." The incident occurred at Terminal 7 in front of numerous witnesses at about 16:30 local time, according to Los Angeles Airport Police. The photographer suffered a cut to his forehead and received five stitches. Witnesses said there was blood on the floor of the terminal.
Tyson is currently serving a three-probation term from a drug arrest in Arizona, but it remains to be seen if the airport incident would be considered a violation of those terms.
