在中国媒体上，中式英语是永恒的话题之一，雷人指数与搞笑指数双高。昨天的《广州日报》就刊登了这么一则新闻：

一些景区忽视社会文化、价值观念、审美趣味等方面的差异出现中英文不符、译名不统一、字字对应等诸多翻译失误，例如西樵山一标识牌上写着“大力提倡‘五讲、四美、三热爱’： We advocate ‘Five Stresses，Four Beauties（四个美人）and Three Loves（三个情人）’.”

说实在的，把外交部的翻译高手请来，对这“五讲四美三热爱”这样的高等数学缩略语也会张口结舌，除非他还记得这“五讲四美三热爱”的具体内容，一条条地说一遍，否则没人能听懂：

5 stresses, 4 beauties and 3 loves are:

5 stresses
stress on decorum (讲文明)
stress on manners (讲礼貌)
stress on hygiene (讲卫生)
stress on discipline (讲秩序)
stress on morals (讲道德)

4 beauties
beauty of the mind (心灵美)
beauty of the language (语言美)
beauty of the behavior (行为美)
beauty of the environment (环境美)

3 loves
love of the motherland (热爱祖国)
love of the socialism (热爱社会主义)
love of the Chinese Communist Party (热爱中国共产党)

汉语中类似的缩略语还有很多，比如“一国两制”、“两岸三地”、“三个代表”、“四个现代化”……，比“五讲四美三热爱”更难翻译的还有“八荣八耻”，有人翻译成eight do's and eight don'ts，也有人翻译为take the eight glorious merits against eight shameful behaviors，新华网的翻译是eight honors，eight disgraces：

-- love the country; do it no harm.
-- serve the people; do no disservice.
-- follow science; discard ignorance.
-- be diligent; not indolent.
-- be united, help each other; make no gains at other's expense.
-- be honest and trustworthy; do not spend ethics for profits.
-- be disciplined and law-abiding; not chaotic and lawless.
-- live plainly, struggle hard; do not wallow in luxuries and pleasures.

中国人喜欢用数字提纲挈领概括很庄重的概念，英语中似乎没有这样的数字缩略法，如果要是用这样的缩略法也是借用中国人的习惯用法，记得美国官方发言人曾经说过“The Four Noes and One Without”，提醒台湾当局遵循自己保证过的“四不一没有”。英语中只是在某些特定的场合会借用数字谐音来简写某些词汇。比如美国密执根州有个地方叫Onekama，美国有人把这个地名简写为“1,”(读one comma)。

在英语中以数字为基础的缩略语，在短信、网上聊天上出现的频率很高，这一点倒和中文类似。中国网民习惯用88表示“拜拜”，因为是bye bye的谐音。查一查《说文解字》，“八,别也。象分别相背之形”。原来，“八”字一左一右的两撇，是两个人相背而分别的模样，“八”在中国自古就表示分别，与bye是个巧合。

Eight在英文短信和网上聊天时也常常出现，也是借用其谐音：

2L8=Too late

L8R=later

STR8=strait

W8=wait

其他数字也可以用来做网上缩略语，比如2这个词因为与too谐音，所以使用频率也不低，除了前面已经说过的2L8，还有：

U2=you too

Me2=me too

G2G=gotta to go

还有，中国人不大喜欢的4字，在英语中发音因为与for相近，所以也压衍生出了一些缩略语：

4GM=forgive me

4U=question for you

B4=before

B4N=bye for now

但是，如果你在手机短信或者网上聊天时看到“404”，与for完全没有关系，如果看不懂，那就对了，因为这个缩略语的含义就是clueless，其来源是下面这个图：
