The subject of this year’s Kunming International Expo(博览会) is “man and nature walking hand in hand into the 21st Century”. When the UK was asked to take part, it seemed natural to build a garden. Now the British Garden will be a central part when Expo opens on May 1.

David Patterson , the Curator(馆长) of the Department of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, is leading the team now putting the finishing couches to the garden. The Royal Botanic Gardens were chosen for a very good reason. They have the largest collection of Chinese plants in the world outside China.

“Ever since people in Britain started gardening for pleasure they have used Chinese plants,” Patterson told English Corner. “There are probably Chinese flowers in nearly every garden in Britain. This is a good chance to give something back.”

The garden has been carefully designed to mix traditional(传统) British skills with the local Chinese environment. David Patterson describes the garden as “formal but gentle”. It contains a raised flower bed, a summer house and a lot of local trees. The garden is contained behind a wall of local, yellow stone. It is intended to be a place of serious thinking and quiet enjoyment.

We find that bright children are seldom held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary(相反), both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按能力分班)pupils. It does not consider the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be the bottom of the top grade.

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual(智力的) ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We care much about the development of all the pupils’ abilities to the full, not just their study ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching does good to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the chance to learn to work together, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze(分析) and evaluate(评价) and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual(个人的) tasks, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some class teaching when this is proper. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this well. An advanced pupil can do advanced work and it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to achieve this goal.

五、one possible version:

Dear Linda,

How are you getting along? I hope things are going well with you too.

Your letter got to me at the end of last moth. Maybe it was delayed on the way I’m sorry I didn’t answer you on time. For these days I have been busy preparing for an exam.

From your letter, I know you like your work very much, but you don’t like New York. I think you’ve spent all your time on your job. You should go to see some films, visit some museums, and do some shopping in your spare time.

Thank you for your invitation. But I’m very sorry that I can’t come to spend Christmas with you, because my aunt said she would come to my house on that day. By the way, can you come here to spend the holidays with us?

Please give my best regards to your parents.

Yours,

Lois
