The Superbrowser

See also:My roundup of the funniest extensions

Yesterday I decided to undertake an experiment. My favourite browser,Firefox, allows its users to add extensions. Currently 1102 extensions are available atMozilla update. I decided to install 100 of the most popular extensions at the same time, trying to avoid those that duplicated others functionality. Cruelly, the hundredth was theXPI delay remover.
This scrollable screenshot below shows the result. (View in own page)

It was really extraordinarily stable. The work of hundreds of programmers who had no idea their code would be used together, coexisting happily in the browser.
Here is what I got when I right-clicked:

Overall I was very impressed. The browser was a little slow on my machine (which doesn’t have impressive specs) but there were no crashes except when installing the extensions. The main problem I had was that the statusbar became so wide that on some websites I had to expand the browser window onto my second monitor! I discovered a number of extensions that I would not otherwise have known about and strongly recommend a trawl through at least the first hundred.

Update: (28 Feb) Statistics

It takes around seven seconds to start up.
It freezes for at least one second between pages (I guess a lot is hanging on the onLoad.)
It has not yet crashed, half hour or so I’ve browsed with it, since all the extensions have been installed (for some reason it did crash immediately after installing them, before restarting.)

Simon,
Certainly many of them are very useful.
They’re all downloadable fromhttps://addons.mozilla.org/?application=firefox
I don’t think I’ll supply a list because these aren’t my favourite firefox extensions, just the most popular.
I promise you there are 100 installed there though!

Firefox and Opera are good browsers though.

If you still have it setup, then some resource stats would be great. I wonder how many of those extensions should really be part of the browser itself. Obviously not all should be (eg I see you have the Delicious extension, and weather) but I think Firefox would benefit from integrating more of these ideas into the core browser. Otherwise the problem is that they can easily break when updating the browser. For some reason Firefox with lots of extensions still feels streamlined, not in your face, and does exactly what you want when you want it, but Opera (which contains alot of these features by default) feels bloated and fiddly to use in comparison.

While I really like FireFox, I’m pretty skeptical of the phrase ‘remarkably stable’. It sounds like the browser DID crash, just not as many times as he expected. Just give us the number of crashes in the number of hours of use. I suspect we’ll all be much less impressed. At least if my experience with extensions is any indication.
I think the extension mechanism is FireFox’s biggest problem. (Where the only other one is the lack of solid debugging tools) Extensions should be run in a protected space where crashes shouldn’t be allowed to hang the browser. (ala .net/java) It would also be nice if it told you which extension caused the crash. I’d like to see if the author continued to use Firefox in this way. The combination of the crashes, and inability to figure out what is causing them would drive me crazy.

“Hmm.. Funny how most of the features in these “extensions” come standard in Opera…”
A lot of people prefer to have a less packed browser upon installation that is easy to thoroughly explore than have it all bloated in. Of course, there’s also plenty of people who do like to have stacks upon stacks of features bundled that they’ll continue to discover for months.
I personally would rather have a solid, intuitive browing experience with minimal extras so that I can add those I’d particularly like later on - anybody can browse a concise extension list to pick out what they like the look of.
The internet is all about user control these days; people actually like to “build” their own browser to their own tastes rather than disabling stuff they don’t want later on after being irritated by it. You feel in control and almost like it’s been custom built for you, which it has in a way.
In short, both browsers cater for different people. Using the fact that Opera has many extras from installation while Firefox has endless ones downloadable is a fairly weak argument since Firefox was simply never designed to be like Opera - what’d be the point? Firefox is all about simplicity intertwined with solidity.

I’m still interested in seeing a list of the 100 extensions, if only for the sake of record. You said you tried not to overlap functionality, so I’m assuming you left out a few of the top 100, which also will change over time.
Neongreen Said,

Yeah, the ironic thing is, opera does almost everything those extensions do. It’s incrediably easy to tuck away stuff in Opera, and the ironic thing is, it uses less memory with all these features than a barebones firefox installation does. Heck, it’s smaller and proven to be faster. Firefox is good, but it doesn’t compete. The only advantage I see for firefox is that it’s open source.

Steve Magruder Said,

I’m using 65 extensions myself, and while they’re not all necessarily the most popular, they integrate very well and my browser doesn’t look a frightful mess (like yours).
The moral of the story: Think about what you install–make sure you actually need the extensions you’re installing, and read people’s reviews of extensions to make sure they have a good degree of quality.

I’m very much of the same mind as Green Alien.
But this test didn’t explore how many sites started displaying wrongly. Worse, it didn’t explore whether any of the extensions opened up security holes. And, most sorrowfully, it didn’t cover what happens with the next minor browser update that suddenly borks a dozen extensions.
