China's UN envoy on Friday expressed support for the strategic cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union (AU).

"As the most important regional organization of Africa, the African Union has been playing an increasingly important role in the maintenance of peace and stability in Africa and the settlement of conflicts on the continent," Chinese Ambassador Li Baodong said at a UN Security Council debate on Africa.

"Meanwhile, the peacekeeping operations of the African Union have become increasingly restrained by funding and capacity building and need urgently the support of the international community including the United Nations," he said.

Li said China welcomes ongoing regular communications between the UN Security Council and the AU Council for Peace and Security, and is pleased to see that the UN Office to the African Union was created on July 1, 2010.

China hopes that the UN Joint Taskforce on Peace and Security created not long ago will be able to carry out its mandate and work hard to promote the strategic partnership between the two organizations, he said.

The ambassador called on the UN to help the AU obtain reliable financial support for its peacekeeping operations, and urged all countries concerned to honor their commitment of support.

China has always supported a bigger AU role in the field of peace and security in Africa, and has provided support to all peacekeeping operations of the AU in different forms, he said.

In the future, China will continue to provide every support within its capacity to the African Union and African countries and continue its efforts to strengthen the cooperation between the UN and the AU, he added.
