2007年夏天，荷兰的天空是橙色的。在荷兰南部，德汉的荷兰U21国家队书写了新的历史。这支球队的主心骨是德伦特、弗拉尔、里格特斯和东克。他们代表荷兰又一次捧回了欧洲U21的冠军奖杯，他们的前途一片橙色。2006年德泽乌、亨特拉尔和斯哈斯这些球员合力拿到了欧洲冠军，现在他们已经晋升到了成年国家队。
“荷兰足球正在复兴。”荷兰足协主席亨克·凯斯勒如是说，“人们说我们的青训质量下降了，但是青年队的战绩正面我们的青训依然优秀。”上赛季AZ在联盟杯表现出色，PSV在冠军杯也打进了8强，荷兰国家队在亚洲之旅横扫韩国和泰国。
现在6个月过去了，我们就要告别2007年了。我们的天空再也不是橙色的了。德伦特在伯纳乌的板凳上百无聊赖地听着MP4，里格特斯也在英超帮队友热板凳，弗拉尔则无奈躺在床上养伤。荷兰足球又一次遭遇了灾难。PSV在冠军杯将被淘汰出局，他们在费内巴切和国际米兰面前一无是处。
阿贾克斯更惨，他们连冠军杯正赛都打不了，因为他们踢不过“强大的”布拉格斯拉维亚。在联盟杯，格罗宁根、海伦芬和特温特都只有资格踢两场球，然后回家——因为萨格勒布迪纳摩这样的球队对他们来说太强了，AZ好象出线形势还不错，等等！5分钟前，AZ刚刚输给了纽伦堡，娘的。。。
荷兰联赛现在在欧洲联赛中排名第9，谢天谢地，我们过去5年的老本还没吃完。如果光看07年的积分，荷兰联赛只有第20名，排在塞浦路斯之前，但是在比利时、苏格兰、瑞典和挪威之后。
不过，我们还有国家队。国家队表现到底怎么样呢？在亚洲之行之后的7场比赛里，我们输掉了三场（瑞士，罗马尼亚，白俄罗斯），就算是赢斯洛文尼亚和卢森堡这样的球队也显得战战兢兢。
球队的未来是灰暗的，我们的形象和声誉快毁了。我们总是告诉别人自己踢得多好看多奔放，但是事与愿违。AZ出局，那么荷兰足球在欧洲最后的一根蜡烛也将被掐灭，荷兰足球将在本赛季的欧洲联赛销声匿迹。
是啊，我们的球场还是坐得满满的，我们的实力却越来越差，我们的形象也岌岌可危。2008年我们需要好好做点事，来挽回一下现在的颓势。但是形势一点也不乐观。

It’s summer 2007 and the air is orange in Holland. In the north of Holland, it’s Foppe de Haan re-writing football history with the U21 team. The main actors are Royston Drenthe, Ron Vlaar, Maceo Rigters and Ryan Donk. The Netherlands wins the U21 again and the future is Orange. In 2006, it was a team with players like De Zeeuw, Huntelaar and Schaars who by 2007 made the step to the seniors of Oranje.
“Dutch football is on it’s way up,” sang Henk Kesler, director of the KNVB. “People say our education doesn’t work, but here is the proof we are doing very well.” AZ impresses in the UEFA cup, PSV reaches the quarter finals in the CL and Oranje destroys South Korea and Thailand during their Aisan trip.
It’s six months later. 2007 is close to stopping time. And the air is not orange anymore. Drenthe is benched in Madrid, Rigters keeps a seat warm in the stands in the EPL, Vlaar is heavily injured. Dutch football looks back on disastrous months… PSV will be kicked out of the CL. Fenerbahce and Inter are too strong for PSV.
Ajax couldn’t qualify for the CL because Slavia Prague was too strong. In the UEFA cup, Dinamo Zagreb was too strong. Groningen, Heerenveen and Twente only played two matches. AZ is the only team with a fair chance to go through…oh..wait…it’s five minutes later… AZ lost against Nurnberg… Oops…
Holland now takes the 9th spot on the UEFA list, thanks to the results of the last 5 years.
If we only look at the results of 2007, Oranje sits on the 20est spot. Right before Cyprus and right below Belgium, Scotland, Sweden and Norway….
But, we still have Oranje.
Although, of the seven matches of this year after the Asian trip, we lost three (Switzerland, Rumania and Belarus…), while the victories over Slovenia and Luxembourg couldn’t impress the fans.
The football future of the team is sombre, but also our image and reputation are in danger. We keep on telling everyone how attractive and adventurous we play, but reality tells us we don’t. After AZ’s retreat from the spotlights there is no longer a beacon of light and Oranje is definitely no candidate to take up the role model function anytime soon.
Our stadiums are full, but the quality is getting poorer and poorer…. Our reputation is at stake. We need to make up the balance in the summer of 2008. But the forecasts are not too positive…
