大家都知道sell就是“卖、出售”的意思，人们可以出售货物，也可以向别人兜售某种理念或者想法。今天我们要讲几个sell这个词的习惯用语。
1. hard sell 强行推销
I wanted a cheap car without a lot of extras. But the salesman gave me a hard sell so I ended up with stuff I didn't need, like leather seats, a sun roof and a lot of other things.
我本来只想买一辆没什么额外设备的廉价车，可那个推销员软磨硬泡让我买下了皮座椅、天窗之类那些并不必需的设备。
什么原因迫使他多花钱买这些装置的呢?那得归究于推销员的强行推销手段了。所以这儿hard sell意思就是“强行推销”，也就是硬让别人买东西。
2. sell a bill of goods 以花言巧语骗取信任
My friends, my opponent is selling you a bill of goods when he promises to spend more on schools and cut taxes too. You ask him how he can spend more money without raising taxes!
朋友们，我的对手既保证要给学校多拨款，又答应减税，其实这两者不可兼得。他怎么可能做到既多花钱又不加税呢?
A bill of goods意思是进货单。注意，这只是开列货品的单子，不是实物。如果有人要你出钱买的只是货单，他很可能在行骗，因为货单只是一纸空文而已。Sell a bill of goods这个习惯用语多年来已经被广泛应用到商界以外的场合，表示“用花言巧语骗取信任”的意思。
3. sell somebody down the river 出卖某人的利益
Our boss promised he'd never sell our company to another firm. But when he got a good offer, he sold us down the river, and the new owners brought in their own people and fired us.
我们的老板曾经保证绝对不转让我们的公司，但是当别人肯出好价钱的时候，他就出卖了我们的利益。新老板把自己人都拉进公司来，却把我们炒了鱿鱼。
这个说法得上溯到150多年前美国实行黑奴制度的时代。当时一名黑奴的最大悲剧可能就是被转卖给密西西比河下游的另一个主人，因为那意味着妻离子散的命运和在棉花地里累断筋骨的操劳。当年很多黑奴就死于这种非人的待遇。所以sell down the river就是出卖某人、令人陷入厄运的意思。这个习惯用语现在多用来表示“出卖某人利益”的意思。
4. sell somebody short 小看某人
Don't sell that man short. He's one of the smartest lawyers in town. You'd be wise to hire him if you're in trouble - he seldom loses a case.
可别小看了这个人。他是城里最能干的律师之一。你要有麻烦找他才对，他从没输过一场官司。
这个短语的意思很像中国俗语“把人瞧扁了”，也就是没看到某人的长处。所以sell someone short意思就是“小看某人。”
