Between vineyards and ricotta farms, a field of bright red poppies dazzles those lucky enough to drive along the undulating hills of Tuscany. According to author Frances Mayes, Tuscany is "the sweetest countryside I know, where inviting roads wind off into fields punctuated by abandoned stone houses."

A mushroom shaped island rises from the crystal clear waters of Micronesia. Formerly called the Trust Territory, Micronesia possesses only two-thirds the land area of Rhode Island, yet lies scattered over an expanse of ocean comparable to the contiguous United States.

Ténéré Desert, Niger, 1997

"Stark circle of rock measuring about 60 feet [18 meters] in diameter lies in the Ténéré desert below the massif of Adrar Madet in Niger. Roughly a mile away in each of the four cardinal directions, similarly crafted arrows point away from the circle, whose origin, purpose, and age remain a puzzle."

A blimp passes over the pristine sands of Nauset Beach on Massachusetts‘s Cape Cod. A popular vacation spot jutting 35 miles (56 kilometers) into the North Atlantic, Cape Cod is "only an accident of land in the domain of the sea."
