Come se dice eMule?
Italian Internet users have the file-sharing bug, according to new data fromNielsen//NetRatings.
Media players accounted for seven of the 15 most downloaded applications by Italian Internet users in January of 2007. Familiar brand names like Windows Media Player, RealPlayer and iTunes each had millions of downloads.
What is equally interesting is the presence of file-sharing programs eMule and BearShare; eMule was behind only Windows Media Player and MSN Messenger in its audience numbers and reach. BearShare was the 14th most popular application, behind MSN Zone but ahead of MusicMatch Jukebox.

The popularity of these media-centric programs, which typically require broadband for best results, is not incidental, since broadband growth is driving the Internet sector in Italy. eMarketer forecasts there will be 36.2 million Internet users in Italy in 2011, up from 27.9 million in 2005.

Using ITU figures as its 2005 benchmark, eMarketer estimates there were 28.6 million Internet users in Italy in 2006. By way of comparison, Nielsen//NetRatings estimates there were 19.8 million people in Italy with Internet access in November 2006.

While data on the Italian Internet market are relatively sparse, users there are going online more frequently, according to theEuropean Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA). The average Italian Internet user went online 4.8 days per week in 2006. This is up from 4.5 days per week in 2005.
Italian Internet users are not only going online more frequently, they are also spending more time there than they had in the past. This is thanks to the country‘s growing broadband penetration rate. Average weekly time spent online by Italian Internet users reached 12.1 hours in 2006, up nearly 50% from 8.4 hours in 2005.
