Win a MoDaCo Zune + earn FREE CASH with M:Panel

Win a MoDaCo Zune + earn FREE CASH with M:Panel

Posted By: Paul (MVP) @ Dec 15 2006, 16:01

I am very pleased to announce that MoDaCo, in association with M:Metrics, will be giving away THREE unique MoDaCo branded Zunes to 3 lucky Smart M:Panel participants from our UK and USA membership!
Chances are you‘ve heard about Zune... Microsoft‘s attempt to dethrone the Apple iPod as king of the Portable Media Devices. Featuring a gorgeous 3" screen, a choice of 3 colours (Black / Brown / White) and a very un-iPod like durable finish, the Zune is a hot gadget at the moment, particularly in Europe where release isn‘t planned until late 2007!
Cool though a Zune is as a prize, we like to go 1 better at MoDaCo... so we are currently arranging to get our prize Zunes laser-engraved with the MoDaCo logo courtesy ofadafruit... they‘re going to be serious collectors items, that‘s for sure!
What many people don‘t realise is that behind that slick menu system beats a heart of Windows Mobile... so the Zune is more closely related to your mobile (and MoDaCo) than you might think!
So how do I take part?
In order to take part in the competition, you need to complete the following requirements...
- Live in the UK or USA
- Use a Windows Mobile / Symbian or Palm device
- Install the M:Panel software on your device by 25th December 2006 (SIGNUP PAGE)
- Ensure the software stays on your device until 25th January 2007
At the second date we will collate all active panelists, and choose the winnersThe first place winner will receive the Zune colour of their choice, the second place winner their choice of the remaining two, and the third place winner will get what they‘re given
Not only does completing the above ensure you entry into the competition, but as a panelist you will be entitled to CASH! When you install the Smart M:Panel software to your device, and after the application has made it‘s first upload of data, M:Metrics send you a cheque for £15 (UK) or $15 (USA)! But it doesn‘t stop there... as long as you keep the application installed, you will earn £5 (UK) or $5 (USA) per month, paid by cheque every 6 months.

Get a 4Gb MiniSD for only £39.99!

Posted By: The Doctor @ Dec 15 2006, 10:31

During my recent trawling of the internet I discovered over atmobymemory.com that they are now shipping 4Gb MiniSDsHERE! Not only that but they are priced at a vey reasonable £39.99... less than I paid for my 2GB MicroSD! Unfortunately I don‘t have a spare £39.99, so, enter mini_man, who kindly decided to purchase one for personal use and testing
You might be right in thinking, £39.99?! Thats far too cheap for a 4Gb MiniSD! Especially as a full size SD of the same capacity is £37.99. However mobymemory are offering them at a 40% launch discount so hurry!
Read on for more details and pictures confirming it works....

HTC S710 (Vox) Smartphone revealed!

HTC S710 (Vox) Smartphone revealed!

Posted By: The Doctor @ Dec 13 2006, 20:52

What with the recent craze of QWERTY Smartphones from manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung to rival the Blackberry, HTC has also come up with this rather interesting device.
It‘s the HTC Vox and will be sold in the near future as the HTC S710. It‘s yet to be comfirmed whether other manufacturers such as Dopod or any carriers will be taking this phone up. As you‘ve probably already noticed, this is the first Smartphone to sport a sliding QWERTY keyboard! It also boasts a fairly impressive spec including WiFi 802.11b/g and a 2.4" QVGA screen.
Full specs after the jump...

Paul‘s HTC P4350 review now online!

Paul‘s HTC P4350 review now online!

Posted By: Paul (MVP) @ Dec 13 2006, 20:39
I‘m pleased to announce that my HTC P4350 review is now online!

Click Here to read the review in full!
I‘ve been running a pre production unit for a few weeks now, and have recently received my retail unit... so you can be sure that the review you‘re reading is of a real, life, shipping, paid for HTC P4350... not a shiny chrome prototype
Here‘s a few quotes from the review for you!
P
QUOTE(Paul (MVP))
A while has passed now since the Wizard hit the streets (over a year), and HTC has now released the HTC Herald, to be sold under their consumer brand as the P4350.
Now, the waters have been muddied a little by the release of the HTC Hermes, particularly the fact that it has been released by T-Mobile as the MDA Vario II. You could argue that the Hermes is in fact the successor to the Wizard, offering a very similar form factor and a hugely improved specification... and you‘d probably be right. So is there room for the Herald? What is it exactly?
QUOTE(Paul (MVP))
For this review I am covering the full retail P4350, that I purchased from Expansys. I have been using a Marketing Sample for a few weeks, but have now replaced it with the real deal
The HTC P4350 arrives in a new box design for HTC devices... more square than before, and generally a nicer unboxing experience
The box contains the following items:
QUOTE(Paul (MVP))
The keyboard. The keyboard slide out action is fantastic. Sliding out from the right hand side of the device as opposed to left on the Wizard / Hermes etc., the keyboard ‘springs‘ out with a satisfying snap... a vast improvement on the previous mechanisms on other devices. As an added bonus, opening the keyboard also powers the device on.
QUOTE(Paul (MVP))
I‘ve been using the P4350 as my main device for a couple of weeks now, and am now using a proper retail device, so i‘m comfortable giving a good assessment of it in use. I‘ll confess that I was very excited about getting the P4350. Living in a non-3G coverage area, I figured it could be the perfect device for me! So let‘s see how it fared!

Skype 2.2 Beta released with new support for Windows Mobile Smartphones

Skype 2.2 Beta released with new support for Windows Mobile Smartphones

Posted By: Paul (MVP) @ Dec 12 2006, 19:43
It‘s been a long time coming... but Skype is finally here (in Beta) for Windows Mobile Smartphones!

Posted as Beta version 2.2, the update also adds far better support for low CPU speed Pocket PCs... if a 200MHz CPU has put you off up to now, then you shouldvisit the download page and try it out!
I‘m putting it on my P4350 now, and i‘ll report back with my findings

Samsung i607 and HTC Herald areas now open

Samsung i607 and HTC Herald areas now open

Posted By: Paul (MVP) @ Dec 11 2006, 16:49

I‘m pleased to be able to let you know that the Samsung i607 and HTC Herald (aka HTC P4350) device specific areas are now online athttp://i607.MoDaCo.com andhttp://Herald.MoDaCo.com respectively... so if you‘re lucky enough to be sporting one of these devices... get posting
I‘m fortunate enough to have a i607 at the moment, with the retail version of the P4350 arriving tomorrow, so I can just check a few facts in my review and put it online! Heck, you wouldn‘t want me to be reviewing a pre-production unit potentially different to what you can buy in the shops would you? (cough you know who you are cough -)
I won‘t give TOO much away... but I will tell you that on the basis of the marketing sample of the P4350 i‘ve been using, i‘ve splashed my own hard-earned on the retail unit... so that‘s a clue. Hmmm, what else... ‘8 way d-pad‘ take your fancy anyone?

Qstarz BT-Q920: Bluetooth GPS with FM Transmitter!

Qstarz BT-Q920: Bluetooth GPS with FM Transmitter!

Posted By: nedge2k @ Dec 11 2006, 09:10

BT GPS receivers are all much of a muchness these days. Sure they‘re getting smaller, more accurate and some even come with the ability to datalog but unfortunately most are ugly and rather, well, bland.
Now, although the Qstarz receiver is a mere 2 inches square (59x44x21mm) and has a 20 channel SiRF Star III chipset with a 12 hour battery life, it almost falls into the bland category. Almost, that is, if it weren‘t for the addition of none other than an FM transmitter and, as some of you will know, short range FM transmitters have just been legalised in the UK
