The future of the middle class in Latin America

For the fourth consecutive year, the CIDOB Foundation, working in collaboration with the Ibero-American Secretariat General and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), has organised a seminar on the Ibero-American Development Agenda (ADI). This year, the ADI Seminar will be held in Barcelona on 3-4 October, a few days before the 28th Ibero-American Summit Meeting of Heads of State and Government opens in El Salvador.

The fourth Ibero-American Development Agenda Seminar will be focusing its attention on the middle classes in Latin America, and the OECD Development Centre will actively contribute to the agenda and debates. Javier Santiso, the Centre's Director, will discuss Latin America's current economic and social situation at a session with ECLAC's Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, and expert Guillermo de la Dehesa, from the Centre for Economic Policy Research. For its part, economist Pablo Zoido will deliver a presentation on the quality of spending in education in Latin America, one of the topics addressed in the forthcoming Latin American Economic Outlook 2009. Education systems will be examined through the lenses of the role of young people in the future of the middle classes, given that the central theme of the Ibero-American Summit to be held at San Salvador will be youth.
