The feeling of gratitude is a reservoir of Wealth!
Thank yous are good for your health!
Decades of research has shown that adults who feel gratitude more often have better social connections, optimism, and energy.
And an upcoming study in the Journal of Happiness Studies showed that the high school students who feel the most thankful have more friends and higher GPA’s, with their more “materialistic” peers having lower grades, less satisfaction and more envy.
Okay, so it’s good for the whole family to practice saying thanks. Here are some tips for saying what Dr. Mark Goulston calls a “power thank you” around the thanksgiving table:
1. Choose something specific to thank someone for. For example “I want to thank you for taking over every Wednesday night with the kids so I can do yoga.” If you’re not talking directly to a person, but to the whole table, still keep it specific and detailed if possible.
2. Acknowledge the effort it took: “I know that takes coordination on your end and it’s a big job.”
3. Say what a difference it made for you: “This is really important to me, because it’s my time to take care of myself. That means a lot to me.”
This reminds me of all the talk we hear of praising our kids. The more specific we can be about the process, the more meaningful it is.
And remember, a thank you is a two way street, and some people aren’t good at being on the receiving end. You know who you are — you shrink away or say things like “oh, it’s not a big deal…” Practice accepting a thank you and really taking a minute to make eye contact and let it land before you deflect the focus off yourself.
Thank you for reading, I know you’re a busy person and you’re preparing for tomorrow’s holiday. It makes me happy to share these thoughts with you.
Happy thanksgiving!
