Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met on Monday with visiting Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and the two sides vowed to advance bilateral relations to a higher level especially in fields such as technological innovation.
Xi extended his welcome to Gustaf on his trip to China this year, applauding the Swedish royal family for its role in promoting the development of China-Sweden relations.
Xi also highlighted the smooth development of bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 60 years ago.
Sweden was the first western country to forge diplomatic ties with New China.
"Chinese and Swedish people have shared friendship throughout the ages," Xi said, and voiced China's commitment to working with Sweden to push forward the bilateral friendly cooperation.
The vice president also expressed hope that the two nations would increase cooperation in fields such as technological innovation, noting that China's achievements in this field would not only benefit Chinese people, but also help promote sustainable development around the world.
Gustaf, who is here at the invitation of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, congratulated China on the success of the just-concluded Shanghai World Expo, expressing his confidence that China-Sweden relations would continue to be further developed.
