Indian National Flag
Flag ratio: 2:3
The National Flag of India was adopted as such during anad hoc meeting of theConstituent Assembly held on1947-07-22, just before India‘s independence on1947-08-15. It has served as thenational flag both of the Dominion of India between1947-08-15 and1950-01-26 and of theUnion of India thereafter. In India, the term "tricolour" (Tiranga (तिरंगा) inHindi) almost always refers to the Indian national flag (rather like the French usage for their flag "les couleurs", only more formal).
The flag is a horizontal tricolour ofsaffron at the top, white in the middle andgreen at the bottom. In the centre is anavy blue wheel with twenty-four spokes, known as the AshokaChakra, taken from theAshoka pillar atSarnath. The diameter of this Chakra is three-fourths of the height of the white strip. Theratio of the height of the flag to its width is 2:3. The flag is also theIndian Army‘swar flag, hoisted daily on military installations.
The Indian National Flag was designed byPingali Venkayya. Official flag specifications require that the flag be made only of "khadi", a special type of hand-spun yarn. The display and use of the flag are strictly enforced by theIndian Flag Code.
Aheraldic description of the flag would be Party per fess Saffron and Vert on a fess Argent a "Chakra" Azure.
