Use a square of paper, white side up. Take a 20 cm (8-inch) square of paper or bigger.

Valley fold the square in half. Press the paper flat, thereby completing the book fold. Unfold it completely.   Valley fold the bottom edge over to meet the middle fold-line. Press it flat and unfold it.
Valley fold the bottom edge up to meet the fold-line made in the step 2.

Valley fold the top edge over to meet the middle fold-line made in the step 1. And make the fold-marks as shown.   First, valley fold the top edge over to meet the fold-marks made in the step 4. And make the fold-marks. Then, valley fold the paper on a line between the middle fold-line and the fold-marks made in the step 4.
Make the valley folds between the top edge and the fold-marks made in the step 5, then between the fold-line made in the step 5 and the middle fold-line, and then between the fold-lines made in steps 2 and 3.

Valley fold the square in half. Press the paper flat and unfold it.   Valley fold the left-hand side over to meet the vertical middle fold-line. Press it flat and unfold it. Repeat the same with the right-hand side.
Divide the paper square into eight equal vertical sections by valley folding.

Valley fold the right-hand edge over to meet the adjacent horizontal fold-line. Being careful to press the paper only to meet the vertical fold-line as shown.   Valley fold the right-hand edge to the left along the existing fold-line.   Mountain fold the layers of the right-hand edge over to meet the adjacent horizontal fold-line as shown.

Divide the top of square into 16 equal sections by valley folding as shown.

Make a ‘valley‘ fold in each small square at the bottom, as shown. The fold-line passes from the right top corner to the middle of the base of the small square.   Step fold the paper as shown.
Form the ‘valley‘ and ‘mountain‘ folds along the existing fold-lines as shown.

This should be the result. Neatly form the ‘valley‘ folds.   Bring the left- and right-hand sides around and together as shown in the next step.
Insert one section of the left-hand side inside the right-hand side on the bottom of the model. At the same time, in the middle, insert one section of the left-hand side inside the right-hand side.

Mountain fold the top edge of the model, thereby locking the model.   The bottom view. Begin folding from a double layer, imposing one crease on another.   Here is the closed bottom.

Here is the completed vase. You can make the vertical ‘mountain‘ folds of the vase‘s top more rounded, thereby making a little variation of this vase as on the picture at the top left-hand corner of the screen.
