The death toll from a massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 702 as of Aug. 10 with 1,042 others still missing, local civil affairs authorities said.
The resettlement for the mudslide-affected people and relief materials distribution work has been orderly.
The resettlement program will be carried out through three periods: an emergency period, a transition period and a reconstruction period. The reconstruction of toppled houses should be finished no later than June next year and better before the winter of this year, and the damaged houses should be repaired before this November.
Beginning from Aug. 10, Gansu Province has started to pay the living allowance to the Zhouqu mudslide-affected people. At present, relevant departments had paid 800,000 yuan of funeral expenses and pension. Subsidies for the affected people will be carried out shortly after the completion of the survey.
Up to now, more than 4,500 affected people in disaster areas have been resettled in concentrated sites, said Yang Enmao, principal of Zhouqu County Bureau of Civil Affairs.
"With the government's help, we can go through the ordeal," said a woman in the tents.
